Groundwater Relief Mobilizes To Address Water Scarcity in Overwhelmed Rohungya Refugee Camps

Bangladesh has been overwhelmed by the influx of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya civilians into Cox’s Bazaar, fleeing from the violent attacks on their villages in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. The enormous influx of refugees has put pressure on areas where water resources are already limited. Although rainfall exceeds 4 meters per year in Cox’s Bazaar, the majority is deposited between May and October, and so in the dry season, where groundwater sources are not available, fresh water resources are scarce.

In November 2017, Groundwater Relief (www.groundwater-relief.org ) mobilized hydrogeologists to Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh to support the International Organization for Migration (IOM). They were tasked with conducting a preliminary assessment of groundwater availability at two refugee camps (Leda and Kutupalong).

In-Situ Inc, based in Fort Collins, Colorado, donated Water Level Meters in support of assessment efforts.

Water resource assessment activities included test pumping of existing water wells, in which the In-Situ water level meters were used to collect static water level and drawdown measurements. The resulting data was collated into a final report along with a significant body of geological and hydrogeological evidence, and was used to identify sites for January 2018 water well drilling, and secure landowner permission.
